Clinical Counseling Intern

Position summary

Anima Child and Family Therapy, a private practice in Fort Collins, CO, is seeking a Clinical Counseling Intern who is passionate about working with children, adolescents, and families. As an intern, you’ll receive training, supervision and mentorship, while developing your clinical skills through the provision of counseling to children, teens and families. Our practice is grounded in Child-Centered Play Therapy, Sandplay, EMDR, and depth-oriented approaches, and we are seeking a graduate student who is specifically interested in play therapy and trauma-informed care.

Learning opportunities

Interns will have opportunities to:

  • Provide individual and family therapy services under supervision.
  • Learn Child-Centered Play Therapy principles and interventions.
  • Gain exposure to Sandplay and trauma-informed approaches, including EMDR-informed concepts.
  • Develop skills in case conceptualization, treatment planning, and clinical documentation.
  • Participate in consultation and supervision focused on developmental theory, play therapy, and depth psychology perspectives.
  • Build competency in working with anxiety, depression, behavioral concerns, grief, trauma, and family conflict.
  • Learn how to collaborate effectively with parents, caregivers, schools, and other professionals.

Supervision and training

Interns will receive supervision from Heather Truschel MC, LPC, RPT-S, RSP, a child and family therapist specializing in Child-Centered Play Therapy, Sandplay Therapy and EMDR. Supervision can also be used for obtaining a Registered Play Therapy credential. Supervision emphasizes clinical growth, self-awareness, ethical practice, and the development of a strong therapeutic presence.

Responsibilities

  • Provide counseling services to children, adolescents, and families under supervision. Interns must maintain a caseload of 8–10 client visits per week.
  • Complete assessments, treatment plans, and progress notes as required.
  • Maintain timely and accurate clinical documentation.
  • Adhere to ethical, legal, and professional standards.
  • Collaborate respectfully with clients, families, and other professionals involved in care.
  • Attend and actively participate in individual and/or group supervision.
  • Attend and participate in staff clinical trainings.
  • Engage in ongoing self-reflection, professional development, and learning.

Qualifications

  • Currently enrolled in a master’s-level counseling, marriage and family therapy, social work, or related mental health program.
  • Eligible for internship or practicum placement through an accredited graduate program.
  • Interest in working with children, adolescents, and families.
  • Strong interpersonal, communication, and organizational skills.
  • Commitment to ethical practice, cultural humility, inclusivity, and advocacy.
